Blog #4

Hi my name is Joseph Moreno, and this blog will be about the quantum apocalypse that is expected within the next 20 years if not the next 20 minutes if it hasn’t already happened.  Quantum computers are a next generation type of computer that is able to do calculations in seconds that would take a modern computer decades if not more to do. This advantage only holds true to certain aspects of computing such as cryptography and machines learning. Cryptography is the main reason quantum computing will make such an impact , some could argue machine learning, but I feel people are more concerned about keeping their private information private than they are about their interaction with robots. I could be wrong.  The issue is that encryption uses an advanced mathematical algorithm to randomize the plain text data and can only be viewed in true form if you have the private key which is essentially the other half of the mathematical calculation. This is where quantum computers come into play.  While just using the public key (key used by everybody to send data to somebody ) a quantum computer is strong enough to calculate all possible private key calculations and is therefore able to access the data with just the public key. This means that modern encryption methods will no longer be able to conceal your data. Of course, the avg person is just a small blip on their radar but what happens when they have access to confidential missile sites or the blueprints for a new fighter jet the United States is testing. Does this company, government or single person who created the quantum computer ransom the data? Or just sell it to a rival nation? Several companies have come out and said that their data is “quantum protected” but how is this possible without a quantum computer able to test it? The chances of it happening before 2035 sit at around 35% while the chances that it already happened sit around 15% according to some. 15?! Can you imagine that somebody already built their quantum computer and are using it in silence to collect plain text data of some of the worlds most well kept secrets? Lets save this rabbit hole for another podcast. Enjoy your day everybody!
